Can we talk about how underrated plums are? Nobody mentions them. Why aren’t there delicious plum recipes blowing up my Pinterest feed? I guess it makes sense. As far as stone fruits go, plums take a back seat to peaches – which are pretty hard to beat this time of year. But with Labor Day nearly upon us, the change in seasons calls for a change in your fruit basket. We suggest – plums!
Plums are a terrific end-of-summer/beginning-of-fall food to incorporate into your vegan meal plan. Whether you just want a piece of fresh fruit to snack on or plan to bake some seasonal goodies, you really can’t go wrong with plums. Not to mention, they’re really good for you.
Fresh plums as well as the dried version (prunes) are celebrated for their significant antioxidant protection. They also aid the body in absorbing iron and are an excellent source of vitamin C. In prunes, soluble fiber helps normalize blood sugar levels and increases insulin sensitivity. Therefore, they play a helpful role in preventing and treating type 2 diabetes. Soluble fiber also makes you feel full after a meal by slowing down the rate at which food leaves your stomach, helping to prevent overeating and weight gain.
Of course, you can also choose to eat plums just because they taste good. We’re okay with that, too. If you’re looking for some plum recipes to experiment with, we highly recommend the following.
